DTF Artwork Requirements: 9 Mistakes That Ruin Prints
Most DTF print problems start with the file. Here are Print Right's DTF artwork requirements, the nine mistakes that break them, and how to fix each one in Photoshop, Illustrator or Canva.

A DTF transfer can only be as good as the file behind it. A disappointing print is often not the fault of the printer, the film or the heat press. The problem starts on a screen, hours earlier, when a design was saved the wrong way. This guide walks through Print Right’s DTF artwork requirements and the nine mistakes that break them most often, so you can check your own files before you send them.

Print Right’s DTF artwork requirements in one list
Our DTF Artwork Requirements page sets out the rules. In short, send:
- A transparent PNG, with no white box behind the design
- 300 DPI resolution
- Artwork designed at 1:1, the actual size it will be printed
- CMYK colour mode
- All fonts converted to outlines
- No screenshots or low-resolution images
- A 0.25″ safe margin around the design
- Artwork that is not mirrored, because we mirror it for you
A PDF containing a background-removed PNG is also accepted. One more rule matters a great deal: orders print from the file you send, and once printing starts, changes cannot be made. Checking your file first is the cheapest quality control you will ever do.
Mistake 1: A white box behind the design
Why it happens: The design was made on a white canvas and exported as JPG, or as PNG with the background layer still switched on. On screen, against a white page, it looks perfect.
What it looks like printed: DTF prints whatever is in the file, including white. On a black or coloured t-shirt you get a solid white rectangle with your design sitting inside it.
The fix:
- Photoshop: Hide or delete the background layer so you see the grey-and-white checkerboard. Use File > Export > Export As, choose PNG and make sure Transparency is ticked.
- Illustrator: Delete any background rectangle. Use File > Export > Export As, choose PNG, then set Background Color to Transparent.
- Canva: Delete the background colour or image, then download as PNG with the “Transparent background” option ticked (this option depends on your Canva plan).
Mistake 2: Screenshots and low-resolution images
Why it happens: A logo is copied from a Facebook page or WhatsApp chat, or a customer sends a screenshot. Social media and messaging apps compress images heavily.
What it looks like printed: Soft, blurry edges, visible square pixels, and blotchy colour where the compression has left artefacts.
The fix: Ask for the original file, ideally a vector (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) or a large PNG. If only a small image exists, rebuild it: trace simple logos in Illustrator with the Pen tool, or redraw text using the same or a similar font. Enlarging a small image in Photoshop does not add real detail; it only makes the blur bigger. If you do not design yourself, a freelance designer can redraw a logo for you.
Mistake 3: Not designing at actual size
Why it happens: The design is made at whatever size the template opened at, then someone expects it to be stretched to fit a t-shirt back.
What it looks like printed: Either a design that is far smaller than expected, or one that has been enlarged and lost sharpness.
The fix: Decide the printed size first, then multiply each dimension in inches by 300 to get the pixel size you need.

- Photoshop: Create a new document in inches at 300 pixels/inch. To check an existing file, open Image > Image Size, untick Resample and read the width and height in inches at 300.
- Illustrator: Set the artboard to the real print size in inches, and export PNG at 300 ppi.
- Canva: Create a custom size in pixels using the table above, for example 3000 × 3600 px for a 10″ × 12″ print.
Mistake 4: Bright RGB colours that CMYK cannot match
Why it happens: Screens mix light (RGB) and can show very bright greens, blues and oranges. Printers mix ink (CMYK), which has a smaller range of colours.
What it looks like printed: Neon greens turn duller, electric blues look slightly purple, and a brand colour does not quite match the customer’s signboard.
The fix:
- Photoshop: Use Image > Mode > CMYK Color, then adjust any colours that shifted before you export.
- Illustrator: Use File > Document Color Mode > CMYK Color, and pick swatches in CMYK values.
- Canva: PNG downloads are RGB. Avoid very saturated neon shades, and if exact colour matters, send us the file and ask before printing a large order.
For brand colours, print one small test before committing to a bulk run.
Mistake 5: Fonts that are not converted to outlines
Why it happens: A vector or PDF file uses a font installed on the designer’s computer but not on ours.
What it looks like printed: The text is swapped for a default font, spacing changes, or letters go missing entirely.
The fix: In Illustrator, select all text and use Type > Create Outlines, then save a copy (keep an editable version for yourself). In Photoshop, right-click a type layer and choose Convert to Shape, or simply export a flattened PNG. Canva flattens text when you download a PNG, so this mistake mostly affects PDF, AI and SVG files.
Mistake 6: Ignoring the 0.25″ safe margin
Why it happens: The design is stretched right to the edge of the canvas to “use every inch”.
What it looks like printed: Letters or outlines clipped at the edge, or a design that cannot be cut out cleanly from a sheet.
The fix: Keep all important artwork at least 0.25″ inside the edge. In Photoshop and Illustrator, add guides 0.25″ in from each side. In Canva, turn on the margin and rulers view and keep elements inside them. This matters even more on gang sheets, where designs sit close together.
Mistake 7: Mirroring the artwork yourself
Why it happens: People who have used sublimation or heat transfer vinyl are used to flipping designs before printing or cutting.
What it looks like printed: Backwards text on every single shirt, because we mirror the file too, which flips it twice.
The fix: Send the design exactly as it should read on the garment. If you already flipped it, undo the flip: in Photoshop use Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal, in Illustrator use Object > Transform > Reflect (vertical axis), and in Canva use Flip > Flip horizontal.
Mistake 8: Soft shadows, glows and halo edges
Why it happens: Drop shadows, outer glows, feathered edges and low-opacity layers create semi-transparent pixels. Automatic background removal can also leave a faint fringe of the old background around hair or edges.
What it looks like printed: Speckled or grainy areas where a smooth fade was intended, and a thin light or dark outline around the design, which is especially noticeable on dark fabric.
The fix: Place a temporary solid black layer, then a solid bright layer, under your design and zoom in to 200–300 percent. Fringes show up immediately.
- Photoshop: Delete the check layers before exporting. Clean edges with Layer > Matting > Defringe, or load the layer selection, use Select > Modify > Contract by a pixel or two, invert and delete. Replace soft drop shadows with solid offset shapes where possible.
- Illustrator: Avoid Effect > Stylize shadows and glows for DTF; use solid shapes instead, then Object > Expand Appearance.
- Canva: Remove shadow and glow effects, keep transparency at 100 percent, and zoom in on background-removed photos to check edges.
Mistake 9: Hairline strokes and tiny text
Why it happens: A detailed logo that looks fine on a large screen is shrunk down to a small chest print.
What it looks like printed: Very thin lines break up, small letters fill in, and detail is lost once the transfer is pressed into the weave of the fabric.
The fix: View the design at its real printed size (100 percent zoom at actual size, or hold a printout against a t-shirt). If you cannot read it comfortably, thicken strokes, simplify the logo or make it larger. In Illustrator, check the stroke weight in the Stroke panel and expand strokes before export. When in doubt, print one A4 test sheet first.
Worked example: preparing a school logo for a chest print
Say a customer wants a 3″ left-chest logo on 30 black 220 GSM cotton t-shirts and sends a small image from WhatsApp.
- Ask for the original logo. If none exists, rebuild it as a vector.
- Set the artboard to 3″ × 3″ (900 × 900 px at 300 DPI), CMYK.
- Keep the artwork 0.25″ inside the edges, and convert text to outlines.
- Check edges on black and bright backgrounds, then delete the check layers.
- Export a transparent PNG at 300 DPI, not mirrored.
- Arrange 30 copies on a sheet or ask us to help lay them out.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send a JPG file for DTF printing?
A JPG cannot hold a transparent background, so any white or coloured background will print. Send a transparent PNG at 300 DPI, or a PDF containing a background-removed PNG.
Should I mirror my design before sending it?
No. Send the design exactly as it should read on the garment. Print Right mirrors the artwork before printing, so a file you have already flipped will print backwards.
My design is only 800 pixels wide. Is that enough?
At 300 DPI, 800 pixels covers a little under 3 inches. That can work for a small chest logo but not for a large back print. Multiply the printed size in inches by 300 to find the pixels you need.
Can I change my file after I place the order?
Orders print from the file you send, and once printing starts changes cannot be made. Check your file against the requirements before sending, and message us straight away if you spot a problem.
Can I design DTF artwork in Canva?
Yes, if you set a custom size in pixels for 300 DPI, remove the background, avoid shadow and glow effects, and download a PNG with a transparent background. Avoid very bright neon colours, as Canva PNG files are RGB.
