DTF Gang Sheets: Fit More Designs and Cut Your Cost per Print

A DTF gang sheet is one long strip of transfer film with many designs packed onto it, printed in one go and cut apart afterwards. Instead of paying for a separate sheet for every logo, you pay for the film and fill it with as much artwork as fits. Done well, a gang sheet lowers your cost per print. Done carelessly, it can cost more than ordinary A4 or A3 sheets.

What a DTF gang sheet is, and the sizes you can order

With DTF (direct to film), your design is printed onto film with colour and white ink, coated with hot-melt powder and cured. You then press it onto the garment. If you are new to the process, start with our guide What Is DTF Printing? A Complete Guide for Sri Lanka.

The honest starting point: price per square inch

Before assuming a gang sheet is always cheaper, divide each price by its print area. The figures below are rounded to the nearest cent.

Per square inch, the four options are close. So the saving from a gang sheet does not come from cheaper film. It comes from layout: how many of your designs you can fit with little wasted space. That is why the next sections matter.

The spacing we have allowed in these examples

Designs need room around them so they can be cut apart cleanly. In every calculation below we have allowed:

• 0.25″ between the outer designs and the edge of the print area
• 0.5″ gap between neighbouring designs

This is a comfortable working allowance, not a fixed rule. If you want to pack tighter, ask us first. Remember that each design file should also keep its own 0.25″ safe margin, as set out on our DTF artwork requirements page.

A quick formula for how many designs fit across a sheet: take the sheet width, subtract 0.5″ for the two edges, add 0.5″, then divide by (design width + 0.5″) and round down. Do the same for the length, and multiply the two answers.

Worked example 1: 3.5″ chest logos

A 3.5″ × 3.5″ left-chest logo is a very common DTF job. Here is how many fit on each size with the spacing above, and what each logo costs.

This may surprise you. On the 11″ gang sheet, two 3.5″ logos use 8″ of the width including edges and gap, but a third would need 4″ more, so 3″ of every row goes unused. The result is a higher cost per logo than an A4 sheet. The 22″ roll fits five across, so it gives the lowest cost per logo.

What happens if the logo is 3″ instead

If your customer is happy with a 3″ × 3″ chest logo, three fit across the 11″ width (3 × 3″ plus two 0.5″ gaps plus 0.5″ of edges is exactly 10.5″) and eleven fit down. That is 33 logos on one metre, or about LKR 36.36 each at LKR 1,200, and about LKR 30.30 each at the bulk rate. Never shrink a design without the customer’s agreement, but it is worth offering the option when price matters.

Worked example 2: full-front prints

Now take a full-front design of 10″ wide × 12″ tall.

• A4: does not fit, because the print area is only 8″ wide.
• A3: one per sheet, so LKR 450 each (LKR 400 bulk).
• 11″ × 39″ gang sheet: one across, three down, so LKR 400 each (about LKR 333.33 bulk).
• 22″ × 39″ roll: two across, three down, so six prints and also LKR 400 each (about LKR 333.33 bulk).

For larger designs, the gang sheet beats A3 because three 12″ designs share one 39″ length with little left over.

Worked example 3: mixing designs on one metre

Gang sheets really earn their place on mixed orders. Say a small club needs two full-front prints (10″ × 12″) and six 3.5″ chest logos.

Using separate sheets: two A3 sheets for the fronts (LKR 900) plus one A3 sheet for the six logos, which holds up to eight (LKR 450). Total LKR 1,350.

Using one 11″ × 39″ gang sheet:

1. 0.25″ top edge
2. First front print, 12″, then a 0.5″ gap
3. Second front print, 12″, then a 0.5″ gap
4. Three rows of two logos: 3 × 3.5″ plus two 0.5″ gaps = 11.5″
5. 0.25″ bottom edge

That uses 37″ of the 39″ length, so everything fits for LKR 1,200, a saving of LKR 150 on this order. There is also a strip about 2.5″ wide beside the logo rows, which is enough for small items such as 2.5″ × 1″ back-neck labels.

Sweet-spot widths: plan designs to fit the sheet

Because waste across the width is what pushes up the cost, it helps to know the largest design width that fits a given number across. With our spacing allowance:

For example, 5″ × 5″ designs fit two across and seven down on an 11″ metre: 14 designs at about LKR 85.71 each, compared with LKR 120 each on A4 (two per sheet) and LKR 112.50 each on A3 (four per sheet).

How to build a gang sheet file

1. Set up the canvas at actual size. 11″ × 39″ at 300 DPI is 3300 × 11700 px; 22″ × 39″ is 6600 × 11700 px.
2. Place each design at 1:1 size. A 3.5″ logo should measure 1050 px at 300 DPI. Do not stretch a small image to make it bigger.
3. Use a transparent background. Export as PNG with no white box behind the designs.
4. Keep gaps even. Use guides or a grid so cutting is quick and straight.
5. Convert fonts to outlines and work in CMYK, as our artwork requirements ask.
6. Do not mirror the artwork. We mirror it for printing.
7. Check before you send. Orders print from the file you send, and changes cannot be made once printing starts.

Gang sheet checklist before you order

• List every design and the size each one needs on the garment.
• Compare cost per design on A4, A3, 11″ and 22″ using the method above.
• Fill leftover space with spare copies of popular designs, small labels or test prints.
• If your monthly total is close to 16 m, check whether planning orders together reaches the bulk rate.
• Confirm garment colours and sizes with the t-shirt size and fit guide before you print.
• Have your press ready: cotton at 160 °C for 25 seconds with firm pressure, then peel only when fully cool. Test on a spare piece first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a DTF gang sheet always cheaper than A4 or A3 sheets?

No. Per square inch the prices are close, so the saving depends on layout. Small 3.5 inch logos cost less per logo on A4 or A3 than on an 11 inch gang sheet, while larger or mixed designs usually cost less on a gang sheet.

How much space should I leave between designs on a gang sheet?

Our examples allow 0.5 inch between designs and 0.25 inch at the edges, which makes cutting easy. Each design file should also keep its own 0.25 inch safe margin. Ask us before packing designs tighter.

Can I put different designs and sizes on one gang sheet?

Yes. Mixing designs is where gang sheets work best. Place every design at its actual print size on one transparent PNG, keep the gaps even, and do not mirror the file.

When does the bulk gang sheet price apply?
