You can make a great printed t-shirt, mug or photo crystal, but it only becomes a business when people find it, trust you and pay. The good news is that you can sell online in Sri Lanka without a website or a shop front. WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and marketplaces such as ikman.lk and Daraz give you ways to reach customers from home. This guide shows you how to set up, which channels suit which products, and how to handle orders, payment and delivery without costly mistakes.

Get the basics ready before you post

Customers buying online cannot touch your product, so everything they see and read has to do that job. Before your first post, prepare:

  • Real samples. Press a few of your best designs on actual blanks and photograph them. A mock-up is useful for showing a new design, but say clearly that it is a mock-up.
  • Good photos. Use daylight near a window, a plain background, and several angles: front, close-up of the print, and the product in use.
  • A price list. Work out your prices with all online costs included (see the pricing section below).
  • Clear policies. Delivery time, payment terms, and what happens if a personalised item arrives damaged.
  • A consistent name. Use the same business name and profile picture on every channel. If you plan to trade under a business name, check the current requirements with your Divisional Secretariat.

Where to sell online in Sri Lanka

You do not need to be everywhere. Start with one or two channels you can keep up with properly.

Channel Works well for Tips Watch out for
WhatsApp Business Taking orders, sending proofs, repeat customers Set up a catalogue, labels and quick replies Only message people who have contacted you or agreed to hear from you
Facebook page Showing your range, building trust, local groups Post finished work regularly and pin your ordering details Slow replies lose enquiries
Facebook Marketplace Ready-made stock such as printed t-shirts Clear photos, price and area in every listing Many enquiries with no follow-through
Instagram Gifts, photo products, designs with a strong look Short videos of pressing and unboxing Needs a steady flow of good images
TikTok Showing the process, reaching new buyers Film a real job from blank to finished product Views do not always turn into orders
ikman.lk Local buyers searching for a specific item Use the words buyers search for in your title Check the site’s current posting rules and fees
Daraz Standard, non-personalised products Keep stock counts accurate Check current seller terms, fees and return rules before listing

Personalised items such as name mugs or photo crystals usually suit WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, where you can talk to the customer and send a proof. Fixed designs in set sizes are easier to list on marketplaces.

Turn WhatsApp Business into your shop counter

  1. Complete your profile: business name, short description, area, opening hours and a link to your Facebook or Instagram page.
  2. Build a catalogue: one item per product, with photos, a short description and the price.
  3. Create labels for each order stage, for example “New enquiry”, “Proof sent”, “Paid”, “In production”, “Dispatched”.
  4. Save quick replies for questions you answer every day: sizes, delivery time, how to send a photo, payment details.
  5. Set a greeting and away message so customers know when you will reply.

Write listings that answer questions before they are asked

Every question a customer has to ask is a chance for them to lose interest. A good listing for a printed t-shirt includes:

  • What it is printed on, for example a 220 GSM premium cotton t-shirt
  • Available colours and sizes, with a link to a size guide such as our t-shirt size and fit guide
  • Print method and print size, for example an A4-size DTF front print
  • Care advice: wash inside out and avoid ironing directly on the print
  • Price, delivery time and delivery areas
  • For personalised items: exactly what the customer needs to send, such as the name, date or photo

For photo gifts, ask customers to send the original photo file, not a screenshot. Screenshots and images saved from social media often print blurred.

A simple order process for personalised products

  1. Enquiry. Reply quickly with your quick-reply price list.
  2. Confirm details in writing. Size, colour, quantity, text spelling, photo and delivery address.
  3. Send a proof. A simple mock-up showing placement and wording.
  4. Get written approval of the proof before you print. Once it is printed, it cannot be changed.
  5. Take payment according to your policy. For personalised items it is sensible to ask for full or part payment in advance, because they cannot be resold.
  6. Produce and check. Inspect the item and take a photo before packing.
  7. Pack and dispatch. Send the tracking or courier details.
  8. Follow up. Ask if everything arrived well, and whether you may share their photo or comment.

If you order DTF transfers from us, the same rule applies at your end: we print from the file you send, and changes cannot be made once printing starts. Our DTF artwork requirements page explains how to prepare files.

Payment and delivery

Payment options

Bank transfer and cash on delivery through a courier are both common in Sri Lanka. Cash on delivery makes new customers more comfortable, but if a customer refuses a parcel, you may lose the item and the delivery charge. A practical approach is to offer cash on delivery for ready-made stock and ask for advance payment on personalised items. Whatever you choose, state it clearly before the customer confirms.

Couriers and packaging

Compare the current rates, delivery areas and cash on delivery terms of a few courier services yourself, as they change. Pack t-shirts folded in a clean sealed bag. Mugs, glass frames and crystals need firm padding on all sides and a box that does not let them move. Test your packaging by shaking the box before the first real order goes out.

Price for online selling, not just for the product

Selling online adds costs that are easy to forget. Build a cost sheet like the one below. The DTF transfer price is Print Right’s published price at the time of writing (check the DTF printing page for today’s price); every other line is for your own figures.

Cost item (one t-shirt with an A4 DTF print) Amount
DTF transfer, one A4 sheet LKR 240 (LKR 200 each from 51 sheets)
Blank t-shirt Your quote: LKR ______
Packaging Your figure: LKR ______
Courier, if you include delivery in the price Your courier’s rate: LKR ______
Platform or payment fees, if any Your figure: LKR ______
Allowance for reprints and refused parcels Your figure: LKR ______
Your time for messages, proofs and packing Your figure: LKR ______
Total cost LKR ______

Your selling price should cover the total and leave a profit. Our guide How to Price Printed T-Shirts, Mugs and Gifts for Profit walks through the method step by step.

Build trust and get found

  • Show real work. Photos and short videos of actual orders build more trust than stock images.
  • Ask permission before posting a customer’s photo, name or message.
  • Reply quickly and politely, even when the answer is no.
  • Plan around the calendar. Avurudu, Vesak, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, school sports meets and graduations all bring different orders. See The Sri Lankan Printing Calendar for a month-by-month plan.
  • Respect copyright. Do not print film characters, brand logos or team crests without permission. Original designs are safer and set you apart.

Your weekly online selling routine

  • Post at least a few pieces of finished work across your chosen channels
  • Answer every enquiry and move each order to the right WhatsApp label
  • Update catalogue prices and remove anything out of stock
  • Record every sale, cost and refused parcel in a simple spreadsheet
  • Check which posts brought real orders, not just likes, and make more of those

When you are ready to stock up, browse our t-shirt blanks, sublimation mugs and sublimation photo crystals. If you are still choosing what to sell, read 15 Printing Business Ideas You Can Start from Home in Sri Lanka.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website to sell printed products online in Sri Lanka?

No. You can start with WhatsApp Business, a Facebook page and Instagram. A website can come later, once you have steady orders and clear photos of your products.

Should I offer cash on delivery for personalised items?

It is your choice, but personalised items cannot be resold if a parcel is refused. A practical approach is to offer cash on delivery for ready-made stock and ask for full or part payment in advance for personalised orders. State your policy clearly before the customer confirms.

Can I sell on Daraz or ikman.lk as a home business?

These platforms are open to many types of sellers, but their rules, fees and requirements change. Check each platform’s current seller terms before you list, and check business name requirements with your Divisional Secretariat.

How do I avoid mistakes on personalised orders?

Confirm every detail in writing, send a proof showing placement and spelling, and print only after the customer approves it. Ask for original photo files rather than screenshots.
